Spirits (スピリット, Supiritto?) are carriers of the curse that have been purified of the Blight. The souls of those who accompany Lily in her journey were relegated to incorporeal wisps, after having lost their physical forms to the Blight.
Gameplay-wise, spirits are a type of collectible granting newfangled skills that can be equipped to enhance the player's playstyle.
Damage
Damage dealt by spirits depends on the attack stat. At the same time, different spirits deal different damage at the same spirit level, meaning each of them has their own "scale".
Moreover, for most spirits, after increasing their level by one, a 20% increase in their damage can be observed (apart from "Combo+" increases).
This can be put together into an approximate formula: ⧼Attack⧽ • ⧼Spirit Scale⧽ • (1 + 0.2 • (⧼Spirit Level⧽ - 1)).
Although it does not always produce the correct values, they appear to be few points of damage away from truth, which is good enough to give a player an idea of how strong the spirit will become if levelled and if it's a worthwhile investment for their ends.
For example, if the player considers scaling the first-level Umbral Knight attack chain on the ground to be 90%, 100%, and 110% at Lily's 200 attack, this chain will deal:
- First hit: 200 • 0.9 • (1 + 0.2 • (1 - 1)) = 180 Damage
- Second hit: 200 • 1 • (1 + 0.2 • (1 - 1)) = 200 Damage
- Third hit: 200 • 1.1 • (1 + 0.2 • (1 - 1)) = 220 Damage
Upgrading them to level two will deal:
- First hit: 200 • 0.9 • (1 + 0.2 • (2 - 1)) = 216 Damage
- Second hit: 200 • 1 • (1 + 0.2 • (2 - 1)) = 240 Damage
- Third hit: 200 • 1.1 • (1 + 0.2 • (2 - 1)) = 264 Damage
