Eleine, also known as Dark Witch Eleine, was the High Sorceress of the Coven and a powerful witch who resided in Witch's Thicket. She is one of the two bosses that are available after Siegrid. Eleine is found at the bottom of Witch's Thicket with a cane and a large, brimmed hat.
Lore
Background
Eleine was a gifted sorceress from a young age, whose perpetual loneliness was eased by her becoming Fretia's friend. At some point, Fretia is implied to have purified Eleine's mother after she was afflicted with the Blight. Due to her immense talent, Eleine was raised within the Coven and later on became its leader.
After the defense of the Twin Spires, Eleine frequently visited Fretia in her quarantine. During one of these visits, Fretia entrusted her with a cherished heirloom necklace from her mother; its magic stone had shattered when Fretia purified the Blighted Lord. At Fretia's request, Eleine fashioned shards of this stone into protective pendants to help sustain the White Priestesses.[1] Despite her tireless research into the Abyss to free Fretia from her burden, she eventually succumbed to the Blight and died in the depths of Witch's Thicket.
Connections
Fretia
Eleine became deeply devoted to Fretia after the Priestess purified her mother. It was this bond that inspired Eleine to spend her life searching for a cure and attempting to release Fretia from her burden. Over time, Eleine became Fretia's most loyal confidante, viewing the White Priestess not as a divine figure, but as a dear friend who suffered from profound loneliness.
As Fretia's health declined from the effects of purification, she became bedridden and was quarantined in the Verboten Domain—a place so toxic that visitors were required to wear a mask for entry. Eleine remained by her side, using her craft to provide relief. She crafted the Spellbound Anklet to support Fretia when she could no longer walk unaided and turned a shattered heirloom from Fretia's mother into protective pendants for the Priestess and her clones.[2]
Coven
As the leader of the Coven, Eleine was the superior of the many sorcerers found throughout the Witch's Thicket, such as the Fungal Sorcerer and the Floral Sorceress. Even after her death, her magical power was so great that her protective barrier over the Coven remained active.
King's Mage Brigade
Eleine's deep affection for Fretia fueled a sharp resentment toward the King's Mage Brigade. In her diary, she expressed horror that they were treating the suffering Priestess "more like an experiment than someone on the mend".[3]
However, she held a clear disdain for Faden, whom she explicitly referred to as a "fool" in her personal writings. Despite her low opinion of him, she was forced to seek his assistance to repair the shattered magic stone necklace given to her by Fretia, as her own magic was insufficient for the task.[4]
Combat
Boss Fight
Dark Witch Eleine is a ranged boss who has three phases. She is always airborne and is highly susceptible to stagger damage.
- Eleine lifts her staff in the air and fires six fireballs in a cone aimed at Lily.
- Swings her staff, firing a fast homing sphere.
At ~66% HP, Eleine briefly goes invulnerable and gains the following abilities:
- The homing sphere attack fires twice in succession.
- Casts a stationary whirlwind on her current location that lingers for a lengthy duration, dealing heavy damage on contact. Only one whirlwind may be active at any time.
At ~33% HP, Eleine becomes enraged and transforms into a more monstrous form, gaining the following abilities:
- Immediately after shooting fireballs or homing spheres, teleports diagonally above Lily and lashes out with the magic vines on her dress.
- Teleports to the top of the room and fires two waves of magic spheres in all directions, which spread out as they travel.
On NG+ she starts the combat at 2nd phase, and transitions to 3rd when she should've transitioned to 2nd.
Spoils
After defeating Eleine, Lily gains the Witch's Bubble ability, letting her swim, dodge, and attack underwater. The player may only use aquatic skills underwater.
The player also gains a main skill, Dark Witch Eleine.
Spirit
Dark Witch Eleine's spirit fires bolts of magic that have a somewhat weak homing ability.
At levels one to two, Eleine has a three sphere combo. Their damage scalings are 80%, 90%, 130%.
At levels three to four, Eleine has a four sphere combo, dealing 80%, 80%, 90%, 90% damage.
At levels five to six, Eleine has a five sphere combo, dealing 80%, 90%, 80%, 90%, 130% damage.
Eleine does not have any noticeable difference when used on ground or otherwise.
Eleine's Last Rite fires ten magic spheres from Lily. When grounded, the spheres are shot in a 180 degree cone above Lily. When airborne, the spheres fly out mostly to Lily's left and right. Each sphere deals 220% damage. Landing all ten spheres on a single target is the most possible damage able to be done in a single moment.
This Last Rite attack requires and expends 1 use of the spirit, meaning it cannot be activated if Lily has none remaining.

Hey... Are you in there?
- ELEINE
- — Cutscene
The Coven is lost.
The place I fought so hard to protect.
Everything I built up by my own hand... brought to ruin.
I risked everything to protect her.
Fretia... the only friend I've ever known.
I yearn only for your safety.
Even now, I remember the day you eased the suffering of what was once my mother.
The day you became the Priestess of the Fount, Fretia.
Such precious time was taken from us, never to be returned...
I continued my research in the hope it may have eased your burden...
But it was all for naught... That folly has become my own burden.
I'll carry it to protect this place, at least until this horrid Rain ceases to fall.
I devoted my time to refining this magic...
Now is the time to put it to use.

Though she may fade, the ward protecting the Coven shall ever remain.- UMBRAL KNIGHT

May you rest in peace...
Trivia
- Eleine is referred to as the Black Witch in the description of the Spellbound Anklet.
- In her letter to Siegrid, Eleine asked for an amulet to be delivered to "that White Priestess". Given that Siegrid was the designated Guardian of the original Lily, it is likely that this child was the recipient of the pendant. This may be supported by the fact that the original Lily is shown wearing an amulet similar to those created by Eleine.
- Dark Witch Eleine shares similarities with the Witch of the Lake from Salt and Sanctuary.
- Both are levitating witches with a traditional pointy hat who spam projectiles and have some kind of tentacles under their robes. The pool of water in Dark Witch Eleine's chamber even makes it seem like the player is fighting her above a lake.
- The key difference, gameplay-wise, is that Eleine is not as horrendously difficult as the former.
- Among all the projectile-based Spirits in the Ender Lilies, Dark Witch Eleine is the only one whose skills possesses true homing properties. Her magic bolts will actively curve and track enemies, making her a staple for aerial encounters.
