Lilac (ライラ, Raira) is the protagonist and player character of Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist. She is an "Attuner" gifted with the rare ability to cleanse those afflicted by the miasma. She is on a mission to recover her memories and uncover the kingdom's fate.
Lore
Lilac awakens in a subterranean laboratory, with only vague memories of her name and a woman concerned for her safety. Later on, she meets the Homunculi who were involved in the kingdom's downfall and embarks on a mission to regain her memories and uncover the kingdom's fate.
Background
Lilac is heavily implied to be one of the many cloned Priestesses used by House Frost as batteries for their Blight-countering Purifiers, having been sealed within a mysterious tube-like apparatus within the Land of Origin. However, she was found by Lilia, Lars, and Nola during an expedition to the Land of Origin, where Lilia decided to rescue her and take her in, giving her her current name.
Unbeknownst to House Frost, Lilia raised Lilac in the Subterranean Testing Site alongside Nola, teaching her about Attuning and Homunculi. At the facility, Lilac became accustomed to the Homunculi and even made friends with a few of them, including Lito.
Following Nola's discovery and sealing by Gilroy, Luiseach took Lilia and Lilac to the Biological Research Facility, where Lilia continued training her in the ways of an Attuner. In exchange for certain information (and Lilia's implied consent to be a test subject), it was agreed that Lilac would be safe from harm.
At some point, Lilia came under attack by an unknown assailant (implied to be Joran, possessed by Abelia), and placed Lilac in a holding container to be sent to the Lower Stratum for her safety. However, something went wrong during the descent, and Lilac ended up crashing into the Subterranean Testing Site, losing most of her memories in the process.
Awakening
After awakening Lilac wanders through the laboratory. The only memory Lilac had was of a woman's voice assuring her she knows all she needs to know and to find other Attuners. Shortly after awakening Lilac finds Nola impaled on her own sword. In exchange for magic to repair herself, Nola lends Lilac her sword. Exploring the laboratory, Lilac and Nola find and defeat Lito.
The three of them manage to escape to the surface, and both Lilac and Nola express their desire to go to the Upper Stratum and discover the truths behind their respective pasts.

What Awaits at the Zenith (Ending A)
Lilac and her party battle their way through the Upper Stratum Administrative District, discovering more about the Empyrean Parasol and the relationship between Gilroy and Nola. Finally confronting Gilroy, Nola reveals the truth behind their relationship, and her intention to take on her "brother's" burden. Refusing to accept this, a battle ensues, ending in Gilroy's defeat.
As Nola says her goodbyes and prepares to take Gilroy's place at the Empyrean Parasol, Gilroy cries out to Nola, remembering his original desire to spare her from such a painful duty. This prompts Lilac to seemingly have second thoughts and suddenly embrace her, pleading that there has to be another way. Nola is moved, but goes through with it nonetheless, leaving Lilac behind with a promise that she'll be watching over her.
After the restoration of the Parasol, Lilac is last seen standing all alone beneath a blood-red magnolia tree, her ultimate fate unknown.
Origin's End (Ending B)
If Lilac has found Lilia and obtained Lilia's Blighted Ring, equipping it before confronting Gilroy will have her and Nola decide to take the risk of destroying the Empyrean Parasol, with Lilac asserting that Nola shouldn't be forced to bear the burden on her own. Gilroy staunchly refuses this path, believing the destruction of the barrier would destroy the entire Land of Fumes, and refuses to hear out Lilac nor Nola's reasoning. Gilroy takes the magic of the Land of Origin into himself, empowering himself in a last-ditch attempt to stop them, and one last battle ensues, ending in Gilroy being put out of commission.
Lilac affirms her decision to break the barrier, but sadly notes that this will also sever the Homunculi's immortality. Nola reassures her that a finite lifespan only makes them more human, which elicits a laugh from Lilac. Harnessing their connection with Lilia through her ring, Lilac and Nola use the latter's Attuner Art and shatter the barrier, unleashing its magic upon the Land of Origin. Their gamble pays off, as while the Empyrean Parasol is destroyed, the magic of Origin is destroyed and the Rain of Death stopped, exposing the starry sky for the first time in many years.
Lilac is last seen smiling alongside Nola beneath a white magnolia tree, reassuring Nola that this curious new era only marks a new beginning, and vowing to live life to the fullest with however much time the two of them have.
Physical Appearance
Lilac is a young girl of short stature. She has pale skin, blue eyes, and a short, blunt gray bob. She wears a single earring on her right ear, resembling a small blue-and-gold vial that glows a bright blue. She is frequently seen surrounded by an aura of light, which can be seen flickering and cracking when she takes damage.
She wears the standard uniform of students of the Sorcerer's Academy: a black buttoned jacket, black shorts, and a pair of knee-height black boots with silver-and-bronze trim. She carries an odd bronze device slung over her shoulder, resembling a cartridge with several tubular slots and a larger, glowing blue canister, implied to be the standard-issue Tuners used by Attuners to work with Homunculi. After meeting Levy, she gives Lilac a blue mantle decorated with golden accents, implied to be the mantle formerly worn by Lilia. Over her journey, she also gains several more mantles she can switch between.
When she was younger, Lilac looked very similar to her present-day self, albeit smaller and wearing a simple, long-sleeved white shirt instead of her uniform.
Personality
Lilac is a kind-hearted, curious child who shows no fear of Homunculi, having been around them ever since she was young, and constantly tries to learn more about the world around her. She treats human and Homunculus alike with respect and kindness, seeing no reason why she should treat them differently from one another, and is talkative with both of them, whether through small talk, trying to uncover more of her past, or trying to help with any problems they may have. She easily forgives Mutants who made attempts on her life, never hesitating to Tune them and ease their pain after a battle, and speaking with them afterwards without any hint of resentment. Appropriately, she seems to dislike conflict as a whole and often acts as a mediator between the different personalities in her party, although she won't object to a certain extent of banter or bickering.
She is highly empathetic to the pain of others, visibly faltering and struggling when seeing the bodies of the dead or dying, and expressing distress towards those she's unable to help or save, as well as confusion and anger towards those like Declan who would torment humans and Homunculi for personal amusement. Similarly, she reacts poorly to the sacrifice of Nola (in Ending A) or Lilia (in Ending B), desperately begging them not to leave her, and only accepting the latter when it becomes clear that Lilia is already living on borrowed time. After learning that she's meant to be Lilia's successor, she also believes herself to be inadequate as she's not able to save others as easily as Lilia did, although Yolvan reassures her otherwise.
Lilac is highly expressive, as indicated by her tendency to gesture with her hands and body while talking with others or even musing to herself. This also shows in combat, as while her Homunculi fiercely defend her against Mutants, Lilac will often mimic their movements and yell out as if performing the attack herself. She shows a great deal of bravery for her age, only momentarily expressing fear or surprise when encountering a deadly new foe, and quickly overcoming her instinct to flinch and cower from her Homunculi's attacks before the aforementioned copying of their moves.
She appears to have a fondness for animals, as her first reactions to meeting Hati were to pet them and remark about how cute they were, and also rubs Hati every time she dismounts after riding them. She also enjoys watching Huginn and Muninn resting for prolonged periods of time.
During certain opportunities, Lilac also displays a somewhat cheeky side. She teases Nola when they first ride in the Central Stratum's gondola, giggling to herself when Nola brushes it off, and also pokes at Nola when she first starts to show worry about her well-being after previously treating her coldly.
Powers and Abilities
Although Lilac appears to have some degree of basic physical training and is versed in the art of Attuning, she is physically frail and relies on her Homunculi and the tools she can equip in order to protect herself.
Powers
- Tuning: As an Attuner trained under Lilia, Lilac is able to Tune Homunculi, restoring their functions, purifying their cores from Blight, and saving them from the madness induced by becoming Mutant. This also allows her to command the Homunculi and bring out their true potentials.
- Attuner Arts: By entrusting her Homunculi with her magic and imbuing them with power, Lilac can allow them to unleash powerful techniques.
- Priestess Lineage: As a clone of the Ancient Priestesses who also bears the blood of the Frosts, Lilac is much more resistant to Blight than even normal Attuners of Frost lineage, to the point of being able to traverse the Land of Origin relatively safely. She is also able to perform rites of Purification, although she lacks the training to properly do so normally.
Abilities
- Dodging: Lilac is able to perform a basic combat roll in order to evade attacks. After obtaining the Azure Mantle, Lilac gains the ability to perform an enhanced dash that works in midair.
- Jumping: Lilac's magic allows her to jump higher than an ordinary child. After obtaining the Azure Mantle, Lilac gains the ability to jump in midair using the runes inscribed on her boots.
- Healing: By using argentine vials containing charmed magicite, Lilac is able to restore the strength of her protective barrier and heal wounds.
- Parrying: If equipping a Carapace capable of doing so, Lilac can project a barrier capable of parrying any attacks.
Trivia
- Lilac is fully capable of talking and has several conversations with NPCs and Homunculi; unlike Lily, who was implied to be mute.
- Lilac is officially female. This has been confirmed by both established lore and the developers:
- Within the game's narrative, Lilac is established as a cloned Priestess. In the series' lore (originating from Ender Lilies), Priestesses are traditionally female, which provides the biological basis for her purification powers.
- The official Steam store page includes the user-defined tag "Female Protagonist", which is typically verified by developers for store categorization.[1]
- During PAX West 2024, the translator for CEO Hiroyuki Kobayashi explicitly used she/her pronouns to refer to Lilac when discussing the companion system from the 13:23 mark.[2]
- While clarifying Ender Magnolia's story direction, Kobayashi stated, "she'll [Lilac'll] travel through some similar dark paths, but this time she has friends with her".[3]
- An official release date announcement on the Binary Haze Interactive website included a story summary stating that Lilac "finds herself in a laboratory deep underground".[4]
- In another interview at PAX West 2024, Kobayashi again used feminine pronouns, noting that the Homunculi "get a lot more story ... to talk to Lilac and become closer with her".[5]
- The global press release for the full game's launch explicitly identified Lilac as female, stating: "Lilac awakes alone ... with only vague memories of her past. She recalls her role as an Attuner ... Together with the friends she meets ... she must uncover the truth".[6]
- Despite the official stance, community debate was notably fueled by:
- While developer interviews are specific, most public-facing materials—including the official website and the in-game script-primarily use neutral descriptors like "the Attuner", "child", or "you". This consistency often leaves her gender open to interpretation for players who may have not seen external developer commentary.
- Lilac's design featuring short hair, a neutral traveling outfit, and a name that can be perceived as gender-neutral in some cultures led many players to initially perceive the character as male or non-binary.
- Lilac's gentle way of sitting and her reflective poses during Respite events reflect the same feminine movements seen in the Priestesses from the first game.
- Specific Respite events contributed to the confusion due to the order in which information is presented and the somewhat visual ambiguity.
- In the "Student Life" Respite event, Motley refers to himself as the "son of the lord"; due to the character's appearance and the way these dialogues flow, some players mistakenly attributed this backstory to Lilac rather than Motley.
- This was further added to in the subsequent "I'm Home" Respite event, where Lilac asks Motley, "Say... do you ever think about becoming the next lord of your house?". Because Motley is so small and blends into the background, many players misattributed the line to him, reinforcing the belief that he was asking Lilac about her own background as a male heir.
- In the German translation, Lilac is referred to with masculine possessive pronouns (e.g., seinem Erwachen). This is a grammatical byproduct of the German word for child (Kind) being neutral, which defaults to masculine-coded pronouns (sein/seine) rather than representing a deliberate change to the character's gender.

Costumes
Lilac has several different costumes.
Sorcerer's Academy Uniform
A uniform worn by apprentice sorcerers attending the Sorcerer's Academy. It is said to be inspired by the garments worn by prior sorcerers that inhabited the Land of Fumes.
Azure Mantle
The mantle of the Attuner who saved Levy. Its brilliant blue color is representative of Attuners from the Frost family.
Attuner's Mantle
A black mantle that was designed to be worn by sorcerers of the Land of the Fumes. These days, it is adorned by Attuners that were once sorcerers themselves. A wind rune has been inscribed into it.
Mantle of Milius
A mantle bearing the coat of arms of House Milius. It represents a desire to someday explore the world beyond the Land of Fumes.
Levy's Mantle
A mantle fashioned by Levy for Lilac. It has been made using items scavenged from the Lower Stratum.
White Priestess' Attire
Dazzling white raiments that almost appear to shimmer. They exude a mysterious aura, quite unlike magic.
Land's End Priestess Garb
Designed after priestesses from Land's End, a realm beyond the Land of Fumes. It emits a faint mystic power, somewhat different from regular magic.
